What a difference this addition made to the house. It gained more kitchen space, a sunroom/dining area, a foyer, an actual laundry room, a covered entry at the new basement-level front door, a covered porch, and a straight staircase. We also renovated the existing master bath and added a patio door to the master bedroom. Now, the occupants have great views of the woods on the front of their property from inside the enlarged kitchen and from on their new covered porch.
These homeowners get so much more enjoyment out of their property now that they actually have a sheltered place outside to read, nap, eat, or just sit and enjoy the view. I designed this porch for Bob Davis Home Improvement but also dealt directly with the homeowners to determine what was most important to them. They needed it to be as deep as possible without interfering with the upstairs window sills; steps centered on the front door; another set of steps at the back of the porch for easy access to the side kitchen door; a sense of balance; all while maintaining access to the walkout basement door below. The owners have decorated and landscaped wonderfully, and the porch looks like it's been there from the beginning.
When adding on, it's all about making the addition look as if it's original. I worked for Nima Custom Homes on designing this addition, matching the new front-facing gable to the existing garage gable. Repeating the diamond window from the right gable helped, as did keeping the pitch and the width.
